The health conscious embrace the bicycle for the exercise it provides, a form of exercise devoid of the boredom of running in place on a treadmill and of the folly of driving to the gym in order to exercise.

In a day and age where we are looking for ways to live more sustainable lives, build better communities, and be healthier, the bicycle has emerged as one of the best ways to achieve all three.

To carry out this program it is exigent that all friends of the wilderness ideal should unite. If they do not present the urgency of their viewpoint the other side will certainly capture popular support. Then it will only be a few years until the last escape from society will be barricaded. If that day arrives there will be countless souls born to live in strangulation, countless human beings who will be crushed under the artificial edifice raised by man.

Walking is the only form of transportation in which a man proceeds erect-like a man-on his own legs, under his own power. There is immense satisfaction in that. All other modes of transport require sitting down, which I find tiresome. [letter to Morton Kamins, December 14, 1981]

Allow me to offer a modest proposal for a solution of Tucson’s disgusting, exasperating, nerve-wracking traffic problem—I mean bicycles! And bicycle streets! There are many thousands of us in this mad fungoid city who’d be happy to ride bicycles to work each day if only we didn’t have to fear being knocked into surgery, intensive care and wheelchairs by some marginal humanoid with a penis problem driving his double-barreled eight-cylinder tractor-wheeled 4×4 high-rider up and down the city streets. Reserve at least a few streets for human-powered traffic only, and at no expense whatever to us taxpayers; with vast reduction in private expenses, at great benefit to the public air and the public health and the public treasury and the public equanimity, we could make Tucson once more what it once was—a decent, clean and pleasant town for full-grown human beings. With its balmy, arid climate and gently rolling terrain, our city offers the perfect outdoor laboratory for such a simple and worthy experiment. [letter to Tucson Daily Citizen newspaper, November 12, 1981]

For every person who makes a trip by bicycle instead of by car there is less pollution, less fuel used, and less space taken on the road.
