Sandy Husmann is a wonderful graphic artist that I met in the 1990s when she was working on projects for the Palmetto Conservation Foundation and Palmetto Trail. I was new as South Carolina’s first State Trails Coordinator and one of my first projects was compiling a statewide trails inventory. I had put together the website SCTrails.net in 1997 and I wanted to populate it with trail descriptions and maps. Sandy drew the maps and they are a work of art. Bob Swanson worked for the Trails Program part time and helped with the maps, trail descriptions, and getting them on the website. I first met Bob in the 1980s when we both rode with the local bicycle club – The Carolina Cyclers. It was very fortunate for us that Bob had retired from his job just when we needed his expertise. Sandy and Bob made a great team for many years.
When my wife Sandra and I moved back to Columbia, SC in 2018 the State Trails Program had updated SCTrails.net allowing users to search for trails on a GIS map. They no longer needed the hand drawn maps. I had the good fortune to reconnect with Sandy in 2022 and she gave me the digital map files. I also reconnected with Bob Swanson. Great to catch up with them both.
I present the maps here as works of art and not trail guides. I’m sure many of the trails have changed and evolved over the past twenty something years. Please enjoy them as the works of art they are. And once gain thank you Sandy and Bob.
