2011 Jim Schmid bicycles and Sandra Schmid hikes Panhandle Trace with Florida Trail Association

Sandra and I joined the Florida Trail Association on another of their signature hikes. This time led by Peggy Grantham (her 8th year leading the hike), the group hiked on the Florida National Scenic Trail from its northern terminus at historic Fort Pickens in Gulf Island National Seashore through Eglin Air Base and Blackwater State Forest to the Alabama border. Sandra hiked with the group while I biked the route. Much of the Trail along the Gulf is on roads and switches to dirt trails in the woods when you get to Eglin Air Base and Blackwater State Forest. It’s a nine-day experience that covers 100 miles. It is a series of day hikes ( 8 to 13 miles) with camping at Fort Pickens and Blackwater River State Park. Sandra shuttled with the group each day and I biked the segments.
