1999 Jim and Sandra Schmid stay at Len Foote Hike Inn and hike to top of Springer Mtn on Appalachian Trail – GA

While researching the Appalachian Trail we learned of the backcountry Len Foote Hike Inn located near the start of the Trail. We reserved a room and drove over to Amicalola Falls State Park near Dahlonega, GA. It’s a five mile hike from the State Park to the Inn. You’re hiking through the mountains of the Chattahoochee National Forest parallel to the 8-mile Approach Trail that leads to the top of Springer Mtn (the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail). We got to the Inn late in the afternoon. They have rustic quest rooms with separate shower and bathrooms. We got cleaned up and joined the other guests for a family style dinner. The next day after breakfast we hiked to the top of Springer Mtn and the start of the 2,000 mile Appalachian Trail. We hiked the Approach Trail back to our car. I thought of this as a great weekend hiking and not camping, but Sandra had bigger plans. She wants to hike the entire Trail someday.
