For six years while a student at the University of South Carolina (USC) in Columbia, SC I taught a Bicycle Touring course each semester. We would meet every other Saturday and the final class was a weekend bike tour with camping at Billy Dreher Island State Park north of Columbia, SC. These photos are from the very first bike camping trip. Sandy Young was in the class. We met in class and got married the following year.
The year before I signed up at USC I was teaching an Effective Cycling course at Midlands Tech. I was certified (EC #103) through the League of American Wheelmen (now League of American Bicyclists). I thought if I could teach through USC the class would get wider publicity. So I made the proposal and I was able to get a weekend class going through the PE Department. It was listed as PEDU 186 – Bicycling Touring. They still offer the course today. Turns out the adviser I met with was also in charge of the Mature Student Program. She got me enrolled and I ended up with an undergraduate in Geography and Masters in Recreation Geography. Pretty neat for just wanting to teach a bicycle class.
